NEW NOT NEW … endlessly repeatable words that create their own resonance. Visually, this echoes through the church tower and allows us to feel our shared history.

The history of this Gothic church illustrated by the placement of the letters on the youngest part of the architecture. Preserving and protecting, the wooden box wall closes the church tower today and thus highlights the breaks in our history.

In its loop-like nature, the lettering asks whether we learn from the past and use the experiences as a basis for our future actions.

Churches symbolize the power of cities, offer orientation to sailors and support to people. These forms of refuge have been needed throughout the centuries and therefore the church tower is also currently an embodiment of security.
In its incompleteness, it simultaneously visualizes the stability and fragility of this security.

With this he offers a wonderful translation of our exhibition theme TO ESCAPE and the pressing issues of our time - which the words NEW NOT NEW also express in their concentration.

The characters look familiar, like writing. However, only three words are legible:

FUTURE of past.

The other elements are characters morphed from old fracture and modern grotesque. The fonts of the past and the present, when freely assembled, form a new connection and, in their illegibility, they form symbols for the viewer.

In trying to decipher these simultaneously known and unknown characters, we read our own story. The feelings conveyed correspond to the inklings that form from the fragmented memories and stories that each family carries. Traumatic war experiences are often unresolved and often arise in human interaction rather than on specific war fronts.

Approaching our shared history with our hearts and inklings is also approaching our shared truth.

The gold plating reflects this highest value.

In the only clearly readable group of words

FUTURE of past I condense all incomplete feelings, acquired thoughts, information and insights from my involvement with Maurinmühle.

The past is over and despite partly conscious and partly unconscious efforts to avoid it, it is the unalterably real basis of our present and thus forms our future.

These artistically created memorial works are a future for this past just as the past is our future

certainly. Both are true at the same time.

NOW WAS NEW ... my site-specific font installation on the facade of the social and entrance building of the Volkswerft Stralsund.

When exactly is NOW? It is a fleeting moment between the future that is happening and the past that has happened. The now are constantly new moments in which our future continually lies before us.

The question about the future of the Stralsund Volkswerft is the question about future economic forms and thus about sustainable models of production and trade. Given the need to change our global structures in order to act sensibly with our resources, these are also the tasks of the present time.

The shipyard and its history symbolize these essential questions. As an artist and the daughter of a shipyard worker, I open them lyrically, placed on the outer facade in the urban space and therefore communal.

The stairwell and the glass facade are symbols of the in-between. To fit into the existing architecture, I use the words NOW – WAS – NEW. Manifest, this lettering calls for our common future.

This work was created for the statewide art show 2023 in MV “betwixt and between”.

Collecting and reassembling is an essential principle of Susanne Gabler's artistic approach. This results in sensitive and delicate works that subtly convey their sharpness with reference to political and ecological themes.
The works, most of which are conceptual and produced in situ, adapt to the spatial situation and immediate surroundings, whereby they are created anew each time.

Susanne Gabler's works can be understood as condensed fragments of discourse that are reassembled into objects from found material and linguistic material. They know how to present their mostly difficult themes in a focused way and how to transcend them through their aesthetic content. At first glance, it is simply beautiful art, which in a second step can make you shudder and despair.
